Dry Heat: A Smart Alternative

U.S. healthcare facilities are working hard to identify and remove the sources of nosocomial pathogens and the resulting hospital-acquired infections.

One potential source of nosocomial pathogens has garnered considerable attention - water bath fluid warmers. Warm water has long been identified as a potential source of gram-negative bacilli.1 More specifically, if not properly maintained, water bath fluid warmers are a potential source of nosocomial pathogens.2

Traditional OR water baths have caused outbreaks of serious nosocomial infection.1 Endocarditis, bacteremia and peritonitis with Pseudomanoa or Acinetobacter have also been traced to contaminated 37°C water baths.1
